Simon Gilpin, Wayne Purcell and Dean Kemp: Manual Handling

5th February 2009 - 6th March 2009

Brass Gallery is proud to present 'Manual Handling', new work by three artists who respond to the world around them by embracing spontaneous, hands-on, 'crafted' approaches to the making of their work in paint and clay.

The results of these New Traditionalists are raw, fresh and immediate. All three artists are based at the East Street Arts Beaver Studio complex.

Simon James Gilpin presents the body of work 'North and South', produced during a two-year period of travel through the stunning Sub-Arctic and Antarctic Regions of both Canada and New Zealand. Working out of his backpack and 'in the field', Simon adopted paper and acrylics for a more spontaneous approach to documenting and responding to the environment.

Wayne Purcell studied Fine Art in Belfast and Leeds and is predominantly a figurative painter who addresses aesthetic and conceptual concerns in his work equally. Wayne lives and works in Leeds and undertakes private and public commissions.

Dean Kemp is a self-taught sculptor specialising in the human form and portraiture. Since 2004 he has completed numerous portrait commissions in addition to exploring themes of the gothic and arcane. This is his first exhibition and is a selection of machetes done over the last two years.
