Brass Friday five: snowy fun!
Brass Five — By Leah Kayles on December 3, 2010 3:41 pmSnow is falling all around us and everybody’s having fun! Or at least they will be after reading this week’s Brass Friday five – things to do in the snow.
(Disclaimer: ‘fun’ is subjective.)
1. Build a snow sculpture
Snowmen are so 2008. Build yourself a spectacular snow sculpture this year and really impress the neighbours. I built a snow sculpture for the neighbourhood kids once and it went down a treat. I say ‘sculpture’, it was more a slushy mound. And by ‘kids’ I mean stray dogs, obviously… Thought was there though.
2. Have a snowball fight
‘Throw a ball at a wall or not at all’. That was what my Primary School Head actually used to recite to us in real life, when warning of the dangers of reckless ball throwing. My favourite thing about this snappy little ditty is that it can be applied to snowballs as well as any other kind of ball: basket, foot, tennis, beach… the list isn’t endless, but it is long. So I’ll stop there. Point is, play nice with your snowballs this winter, because a snowball in the face is no laughing matter.
3. Make an igloo
Houses are all very well and good, but what happens when you simply must have some ice for your après-dinner Aftershock, but Waitrose is shut and the butler has gone home for the night? A room temperature Aftershock and bitter sense of disappointment, that’s what happens, because houses do not come with built-in ice walls as standard. Never happen with an igloo!
4. Join Snow Patrol
I don’t know if Snow Patrol are currently hiring, but I’ve got a guitar in my hands and a head full of dreams so I’m off to give it a shot. Actually, I haven’t even got a guitar, I’ve got a head though, and that’s a start. Why not start your own snow-themed band this Christmas and sing away those winter blues? Alternatively, you could go on an actual patrol of the snow, which would presumably involve measuring snow levels and looking out for yellow patches. Fun for all the family!
5. Move abroad
If you’ve tried steps one to four and they’re just not floating your sledge, you could wave a fond farewell to blizzardy Britain altogether and head for sunnier climes. Of course, you won’t be able to get there at the moment, what with the roads and airports being closed, but you could enjoy an overnight stay in the airport departure lounge instead. All the enjoyment of emigrating minus the travel sickness, tiny toilets and endless hot lemony towels. It’s a no brainer.
